What is the music major like at Notre Dame?

“Music is not only something that is appealing to the ear. There is a very theoretical and systematic aspect,” said music major Kelvin Wu.

In music, you’ll take classes like:

  • Introduction to Jazz
  • Ensemble Management
  • Instrumental Techniques
  • Harmony and Voice Leading
  • Composition
  • Baroque Counterpoint
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Instrumental Conducting

Music majors pursue their passions while developing skills such as collaboration, musicianship, communication, and critical thinking.

After graduation, students go on to top graduate and professional schools and work in a variety of professions and industries. First jobs include:

  • Analyst, Huron Consulting Group
  • Campaign specialist, Tribune Media
  • Software tester, Epic
  • Systems integration consultant, Accenture
  • Technology consultant, Protiviti

“I was so well prepared and so set up for a career and it's really served me well,” said music major Aileen Markovitz. “I would say, absolutely, 100 percent, take the music major.”
