What is the French major like at Notre Dame?

"We learn about the country of France, but we also learn about the history and culture of French-speaking countries in Africa or French-speaking countries in North America like Haiti or Canada," said French major Kyle Dorshorst. "We're really diving deeply into the life of the language."

In French, you'll take classes like:

  • Expressions of France
  • The Art of Interpretation
  • Writing with Media
  • Conversational French
  • Francophone Migrations
  • Literature and Opera
  • French Translation
  • Women in Print

French majors pursue their passions while developing skills such as language proficiency, intercultural competence, critical thinking, and analysis.

After graduation, students go on to top graduate and professional schools and work in a variety of professions and industries. First jobs include:

  • English language assistant, French Ministry of Education
  • Adjunct professor, University of Rennes, France
  • Business analyst, Target
  • Marketing associate, AXA Equitable
  • Staff assistant, U.S. Senator

Learning a language really expands your understanding of the world [and] the way that the world works together, but also gives you a skill that you'll be able to use in the future in almost any context," said Maria Teel. "French is such a beautiful language and so I really love learning it."
