“There’s so much more experience you can gain from working with professionals in the field,” said Braden Kimmel, an industrial design BFA student in the College of Arts and Letters.
Kimmel interned at Purposeful Design, an Indianapolis-based furniture compan that trains and employs formerly homeless men. He took on responsibilities within sales, marketing, and design, working on proposals and leading client meetings. Kimmel felt his Arts and Letters background prepared him for the experience: “How to ask questions, when to listen, [and] those skills that I’ve learned through design research have been really beneficial to me here.”
Kimmel received funding through the Center for Career Development, which grants undergraduates up to $3,500 to cover living expenses during a qualified summer internship. “It has been really helpful and really allowed me to ... take part in this awesome organization, so I’m really thankful for that,” said Kimmel.
