Teaching positions available in Rome Global Gateway through Arts & Letters' 5+1 Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The University of Notre Dame's Rome Global Gateway and the Center for Italian Studies are now accepting applications for two competitive teaching positions in Rome through the College of Arts & Letters'  5+1 postdoctoral fellowship.

One is a co-instructor position of Urbi et Orbi: Catholicism and the City of Rome course, and the other is co-instructor of All Roads Lead to Rome Foundational course. Both courses take place in Rome Global Gateway and applications are due by January 15.

Katie Sparrow was a 5+1 fellow in Rome in the fall 2023 semester.

The 5+1 fellowship program is organized by Arts & Letters and is funded in part with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The program is designed to prepare successful candidates for careers in academic and cultural program development by offering significant professional experience in humanities outreach; scholarly and educational project management; the oversight of professional networks and collaborations; editorial administration and support of scholarly research; and digital communications and outreach.

Co-instructor of Urbi et Orbi: Catholicism and the City of Rome Course at the Rome Global Gateway

The postdoctoral fellow — appointed in a humanities department at Notre Dame and has a strong interest in the history, theology, art, and spirituality of the Catholic Church — would be the co-instructor for the Urbi et Orbi: Catholicism and the City of Rome course (THEO 44208) in fall and spring semesters.

This course is open to students from the Gateway, as well as two other partnered Rome-based universities. The class will offer a historical and theoretical introduction to the city and to the role it has played and continues to play in the Catholic Church from a multiplicity of complementary perspectives. The class has been approved for the Ways of Knowing attribute Catholicism and the disciplines.

During the teaching period, the postdoctoral fellow will be able to conduct academic research in their field of specialization. Special consideration will be given to scholars whose research is linked to Rome and would benefit from a year in the city.

There will be a $5,000 housing supplement and flight costs of up to $2,000 shared by the Rome Gateway and the Center for Italian Studies.

Co-Instructor of All Roads Lead to Rome Foundational Course at the Rome Global Gateway

The co-instructor for the All Roads Lead to Rome course (AL 24107/LLRO 34600/ HIST 34502 ) in fall and spring semesters will also be available to a Notre Dame humanities postdoctoral fellow. The position will work in collaboration with other faculty who teach the foundational study abroad course in Rome.

This course is one of the two courses that are part of the curriculum for all students spending one semester studying abroad in Rome and is a collaborative effort among teaching staff at the Gateway. The course has been approved for the Ways of Knowing attributes in History, Fine Arts, and Literature.

During the teaching period, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to conduct academic research in their field of specialization. Special consideration will be given to scholars whose research is linked to Rome and would benefit from a year in the city.
