Edmund Pellegrino to Give Clarke Lecture on Medical Ethics

Author: Arts and Letters

Edmund Pellegrino, M.D., professor emeritus of medicine and medical ethics at the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at Georgetown University Medical Center, will speak on “A Moral Foundation for the Helping Professions: Medicine, Law, Ministry and Teaching” at 4p.m. Friday (March 27) in the auditorium of the University of Notre Dame’s McKenna Hall.

The lecture is sponsored by Notre Dame’s Center for Ethics and Culture and the Alumni Association’s Alumni Continuing Education office as the 24th annual J. Philip Clarke Family Lecture in Medical Ethics.

Dr. Pelligrino’s lecture is the keynote address for the Alumni Association’s annual meeting of Notre Dame alumni physicians. The meeting brings together practicing physicians and health care workers, medical ethicists, theologians and philosophers to discuss and analyze case studies which pose ethical dilemmas in various areas of clinical practice.

The lecture also is a prominent feature of the student-run 2009 Notre Dame Right to Life Collegiate Conference.

Other participants in that conference, all speaking on Saturday (March 28) in Room 101 of Jordan Hall in the Mendoza College of Business, will be: Lisa Everett of the Diocese of Fort Wayne/South Bend, speaking at 10:15 a.m. on “The Family as the Sanctuary of Life”; Chris Godfrey of Life Athletes, speaking at 11:45 a.m. on “Where Do You Live?”; Elizabeth Shadigan of WomenSafeHealth Consulting at 1:15p.m. on “Long-Term Health Effects of Abortion”; Francis Beckwith, senior visiting fellow in Notre Dame’s Center for Ethics and Culture, speaking at 2:15p.m. on “What the Abortion Debate Is Really About”; and Chaunie Brusie of Feminists for Life speaking at 3:30p.m. on “Say NO to the Status Quo: Support for Women and Children.”
