The Department of Africana Studies and the Department of English present Ernest Morrell, Macy Professor of Education and Director, Institute for Urban and Minority Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Morrell received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. His scholarship focuses on how to provide youth the skills they need to succeed academically and function more powerfully as citizens in a multicultural democracy. Morrell is the author of Becoming Critical Researchers: Literacy and Empowerment for Urban Youth (2004), Critical Literacy and Urban Youth: Pedagogies of Access, Dissent, and Liberation (2008), Critical Media Pedagogies: Teaching for Achievement in City Schools (2013), winner of the American Library Association's Outstanding Academic Title Book Award, and Every Child A Super Reader: 7 Strengths to Open a World of Possible (2016).
