The Department of Music presents the premiere screening of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire.
Pierrot lunaire is a performance film of what is arguably the most celebrated work of classical chamber music of the 20th century. Director Frederick Hohman captures on the screen an intense, intimate, and sometimes shocking experience, amply illustrating the sensual and expressive nature of atonal music. Under the baton of maestro Tsung Yeh, soprano Georgine Resick (in full commedia dell’arte costume and make-up), Karen Buranskas (cello), John Blacklow (piano), and others were filmed in Leighton Concert Hall in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center where they first presented their highly acclaimed live performance of Schoenberg’s work in 2012. The film is interspersed with commentary from musicologist Joseph Auner of Tufts University and with commentary from the featured artists.
