Film and Post-Screening Discussion: "Crazy Rich Asians"

-

Location: DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (View on map )

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians became a giant hit, surprising some, becoming the highest-grossing romantic-comedy since 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Its success also stood out as the film is the first major Hollywood film in twenty-five years to feature a primarily Asian and Asian-American cast (The Joy Luck Club). The plot follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Surprised to learn of Nick’s expansive wealth and thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives, and Nick’s disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh).

Post-screening discussion with panelists Tarryn Chun, Jim Collins, and La Donna Forsgren from Film, Television, and Theatre, Michel Hockx from Liu Institute of Asia & Asian Studies, Jennifer Huynh from American Studies, and Xian Wang from East Asian Languages and Cultures.

The screening is free, but ticketed. Tickets are available at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center or call (574) 631-2800.

Sponsored by: Film, Television, and Theatre, East Asian Languages and Cultures, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and Teaching Beyond the Classroom.
