Lecture: "Peace Possible"

-

Location: C103 Hesburgh Center

Plenty of books have discussed what has gone wrong when we have tried to resolve conflicts in the past. But what has gone right?

Séverine Autesserre is a Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University and an award-winning author and researcher. Her book manuscript Peace Possible tells the stories of the extraordinary individuals and communities that have found an effective way to confront violence. Contrary to what most politicians preach, ending wars may not require billions of dollars in aid or massive international interventions. Many successful peacebuilding efforts have involved innovative grassroots initiatives, led by local people and at times supported by foreigners, often using methods the international elite would shun. Drawing on four years of ethnographic field research in 11 conflict zones around the world, Peace Possible shows that, to end war violence, we have to change the way we view and build peace.
