The 1983 U.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter, “The Challenge of Peace,” engaged just war theory very explicitly as a framework for discernment around the ethics of engaging in armed conflict. What understanding of just war theory did that text offer, and what other considerations are relevant for our present time?
