Lecture: Elijah and Mendelssohn's 'Jewishness'

-

Location: Browning Cinema, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

The Department of Music presents a lecture and panel discussion with Notre Dame Artist in Residence Nathan Gunn

. This event serves as pre-concert preparation for Gunn’s performance in Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah on Sunday, March 1. It begins with a lecture by noted Mendelssohn scholar, Professor Jeffrey Sposato of the University of Houston, titled “Elijah and Mendelssohn’s ‘Jewishness.’” Professor Sposato will examine Elijah in relation to both Mendelssohn’s Jewish heritage and his deeply held Lutheran beliefs. Then he will be joined by Gunn and Carmen-Hellena Tellez, professor of conducting at Notre Dame, in a panel discussion, in which they reflect on their interpretation of Elijah based on their years of experience performing this landmark of 19th-century choral music.
