In her latest meditation on postcolonial identity, Claire Denis travels to the border of French Guyana and Suriname where African descendants of escaped slaves have established a tribal community and are now at risk of being pushed off the land. She and one of her actors seek out a gold miner who is a leader within the community and a potential subject for her next feature film.

About the film series: ‘Power and Fragility’

Each semester, the Nanovic Institute creates a thematic film series focused on European cinema. Each screening in the series will have a twenty-minute introductory presentation by a filmmaker or scholar. All films are shown in the THX-certified Browning Cinema at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on campus.
