Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire and Walton's Facade

-

Location: Leighton Concert Hall, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

Maestro Tsung Yeh of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra conducts a double bill marking major anniversary seasons of two rarely performed 20th-century masterworks for chamber ensemble and the spoken word. Schoenberg’s atonal and abstract Pierrot Lunaire (1912) features the poems of Belgian symbolist and mystic Albert Giraud while Walton’s melodic, witty Façade (1923) sets the clever poems of Dame Edith Sitwell to an equally entertaining score.

Joseph Auner, Tufts University’s chair and professor of music, is a leading Schoenberg scholar. Prepare for the impressive musical ideas of Pierrot Lunaire that Stravinsky later wrote “were beyond me as they were beyond all of us at that time.” Talks begin one hour before curtain and are free to ticket holders.
