Catherine Liu, Ph.D. candidate, Department of Sociology, University of Notre Dame
Liu received her B.A. in English and international business studies at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China. She pursued her graduate study in economics at the University of California, Irvine, and got her M.A. in social science in 2004. She then started her graduate study in sociology at the University of Notre Dame and received her M.A. in sociology in 2006. Liu is expected to get her Ph.D. in sociology in May 2011.
Liu’s main areas of specialization are in sociology of education, social stratification, research methods, and sociology of economics. Her master’s thesis, “Explaining the Asian American Advantage in Math Achievement,” explores the possible mechanisms of the aspects of Asian cultural values that may contribute to the academic excellence of Asian American students.
