Interior of a large, dimly lit cave with rocky formations and a walkway. Overlayed text: Underground, the cave is a refuge from chaos. A place of transformation to emerge anew. A cave does not appear quickly. Millions of years must pass to form a cave.

A collaborative project by Cecilia Kim and David Bird, Dissolution Room examines the cave as a framework for memory, geological time, and data accumulation. The cave is reimagined as a historical site of human activity, cultural memory, and digital storage, where time unfolds in sedimentary layers. Using original footage, 3D point cloud scans, and spatialized sound, the physicality and slowness of geological time is juxtaposed with the chaotic instability of the digital age. The sensory video encourages contemplation on the foundations of modern society through an immersion into archeological and man-made spaces.

This project is made possible with funding from the Notre Dame Arts Initiative and the Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good. Co-sponsored by the Department of Music.
