What is the Italian major like at Notre Dame?

"You realize that you're not only speaking a different language, but you're thinking in a completely different way, and it teaches you to really be able to express yourself really well," said Italian major Erik Verhey.

In Italian, you'll take classes like:

  • Passage to Italy
  • The World in Rome
  • Dante
  • After the Flood: Postwar Italy
  • Fascism and Resistance
  • The Hero's Journey
  • Medieval/Renaissance Literature
  • Modern Literature and Culture

Italian majors pursue their passions while developing skills such as language proficiency, intercultural competence, critical thinking, and analysis.

After graduation, students go on to top graduate and professional schools and work in a variety of professions and industries. First jobs include:

  • Clinical research associate, University of Chicago
  • Teaching assistant, SITE Program, Italy
  • Project manager, Epic Systems
  • Analyst, Huron Consulting Group
  • Audit associate, PwC

There are definitely a lot of moments when I'm in awe of how much I've learned in just a few years", said Italian major Abigayle Hughes. "I've come so far and I know this whole other language; it's just amazing."
