The Department of Art, Art History & Design presents the annual Art History Symposium on Monday, April 22 at 5:30pm in Riley Hall 200. Clare Barloon and Kendra Lyimo will present research from their honors thesis. The keynote speaker is Dr. Antawan I. Byrd, Northwestern University.
"Being Seen Listening: Sound Politics in African Photography"
This lecture examines how sound technologies and photography mutually mediated ordinary engagements with struggles for decolonization in Africa during the mid-twentieth century. Focused on a corpus of photographs, ranging from documentary images to studio portraiture, Byrd explores the art historical stakes of being seen listening during situated moments of political change.
