Ten years ago, G.C. Havrilak, unpublished but carrying a handwritten rejection letter from a certain New York slick in his pocket at all times, abandoned a novel that was going nowhere to devote himself to short stories. His resumption of work on the novel, PK, is a blessing he owes entirely to the Nicholas Sparks Prize, for which he will be eternally grateful.
