La Pirogue
Directed by Moussa Touré
French with English subtitles

Moussa Touré’s trenchant chronicle of a sea trek from West Africa to Europe lays bare the incalculable perils of immigration. His livelihood threatened, fisherman Baye Laye reluctantly agrees to captain a long, narrow canoe (“la pirogue”), which is illegally transporting people from Senegal to Spain. Touré presents a diverse mix of passengers united by the goal of wanting a better life for themselves and their families. Yet the tenuous camaraderie these travelers formed at the journey’s beginning unravels quickly after they encounter unimaginable dangers at sea.

This film is part of the Tournées Film Festival in celebration of International Education Week.
