Panel Discussion: Women, War & Peace

-

Location: DeBartolo Hall, Room 141

_Women, War & Peace_ is a bold new five-part PBS television series (airing on local PBS stations on Tuesday nights from October 11, 2011, to November 8, 2011) challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain. Faculty, students, and members of the public are invited to the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies for a panel discussion featuring: * Nina Chaudry, senior producer of _Women, War & Peace_ * David Cortright, peace studies scholar and policy expert
 * Maura Ryan, faculty expert in feminist ethics and moral theology * Susan St. Ville, panel chair, faculty specialist in gender and trauma

Following the discussion at 10:00 p.m., there will be an airing of episode four of the series entitled “The War We Are Living.” About _Women, War & Peace_: The vast majority of today’s conflicts are not fought by nation states and their armies, but rather by informal entities: gangs and warlords using small arms and improvised weapons. The series reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. However, women are simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. With depth and complexity, _Women, War & Peace_ spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security, and reframing our understanding of modern warfare. This event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the Gender Studies Program
