“I’ve really learned a lot this summer: finding ways to make Shakespeare … really relevant, and understanding the work that goes into putting a production on stage,” says senior Samuel Evola, an English and Spanish major in Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters.
During the summer of 2013, Evola interned in the education department of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, a non-profit, professional theater company located at Navy Pier in Chicago. One of his projects was to create teacher handbooks for Cyrano de Bergerac and The Merry Wives of Windsor, two plays that the company would perform during their next season. He compiled scholarly criticism and production history to “make what we present really accessible to teachers in their classrooms,” says Evola.
Evola received a grant from the Arts and Letters Summer Internship Program, which funds sophomores and juniors who take internships in the U.S. and abroad. The grant “made this all possible for me,” says Evola, “and I’m really grateful for that.”
