A new NSF-funded program in the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values is encouraging STEM Ph.D. students to go beyond standard research ethics training and look at their research in terms of its social relevance. The people behind the project are Don Howard, Reilly fellow and former director of the center, Melinda Gormley, assistant director for research of the center, and Mark Bourgeois, a postdoc hired to implement the program. Students in this program will learn about the broad social and political context of scientific work as well as its many complex, often nonobvious, connections with society.

Situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Constance in Germany, the Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings are a unique opportunity for young scholars to engage in dialogue with Nobel Prize winners in their field. Robert Lester and Kevin Rinz, two Notre Dame Ph.D. candidates in economics, were among the 460 graduate students from more than 80 countries selected to attend the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences in August. The four-day conference included numerous discussions, lectures, and master classes with 18 Nobel laureates in economics.

Eleven Notre Dame graduate students—including four from the University’s College of Arts and Letters—have been awarded graduate research fellowships from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the 2014-15 academic year. Katie Condit, Danielle Fulmer, and Nicole Perez from the Department of Sociology and Charlotte Cunningham from the Department of Psychology were among this year’s winners.

Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values have won a National Science Foundation grant in the amount of $410,340 for a project that will study what training content and methods most successfully help STEM students become ethical leaders. “The literature tells us that ethical leaders are role models to their peers, colleagues, mentees, and students,” says Principal Investigator Laura Carlson, professor of psychology and vice president, associate provost, and dean of the Graduate School.

Kress Rome Prize fellowship in medieval studies by the American Academy in Rome for the 2014-15 academic year. Established in 1896, the Rome Prize is awarded annually to approximately 30 emerging artists and scholars who represent the “highest standard of excellence in the arts and humanities.”

Annie Rhodes ’14 had her first study abroad experience at age eight—in a village elementary school in Ancient Corinth when her family moved to Greece. While she remembers being apprehensive in a classroom where she could not speak or understand the language, she said she quickly made friends, learned passing Greek, and discovered a passion for travel and language.

Chris Dekker, an organist in Sacred Music at Notre Dame’s Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) program, has been awarded a scholarship from the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. The scholarship recognizes an undergraduate or graduate music student who intends to pursue a career in sacred music and who demonstrates “evidence of exceptional musical or artistic talent, effective leadership ability, and outstanding promise of future usefulness to the Church.”

The University of Notre Dame’s Graduate School recognized 344 master’s and 204 doctoral degree recipients and presented several awards during Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 17 in the Compton Family Ice Arena. Alumna Kerry Ann Rockquemore, president and CEO of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, delivered the Commencement Address. The top graduating doctoral students in the humanities, social sciences, science, and engineering were honored with the Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Graduate School Awards.

Kerry Ann Rockquemore, who received her doctorate in sociology from the University of Notre Dame in 1999, will deliver the address at the University’s Graduate School Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, in the Compton Family Ice Arena. Rockquemore will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award at the Graduate School Awards Dinner on May 16. Her address will be the centerpiece of the Graduate School Commencement ceremony the next day, when the University will honor its master’s and doctoral degree recipients.

Danielle Fulmer, a Notre Dame Ph.D. student in sociology and peace studies, has received a three-year graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study the impact of women on community-level peacebuilding efforts in Rwanda.
Notre Dame’s annual Graduate Research Symposium on Feb. 27 showcased the accomplishments of Notre Dame graduate students in the Graduate School’s four divisions: humanities, social science, engineering, and science.
Timothy Miller, a Ph.D. student in Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, was awarded a Mellon Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Dissertation Completion Fellowship for the 2013-14 academic year.
Meredith Whitnah took the first step along her journey to becoming a University of Notre Dame doctoral candidate in sociology when she was just 10 years old. “I borrowed a copy of _Cry, the Beloved Country_ my sister was reading for a class,” Whitnah recalls.
