The Fulbright Exchange Program, National Science Foundation, and other national and international organizations have awarded postgraduate scholarships and fellowships to 13 members of the University of Notre Dame’s Class of 2012, 10 of whom are students in the College of Arts and Letters.
Two Arts and Letters graduates of earlier classes also received prestigious fellowships and scholarships this year.
Michael Fedynsky, a student of political science, French, and European studies, received a Fulbright Research and Study Grant. Fedynsky, a native of Rocky River, Ohio, is headed to Ukraine to study “The Ukrainian Helsinki Group and its Effect as a Political and Social Movement.”
Two seniors received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships. Jonathan Goetz, an economics and German student from Wheaton, Ill., will go to Germany, and Nhu Phan, a student of management, Japanese, and peace studies from Arlington, Texas, will go to South Korea.
Katlyn Springstead, an architecture and Italian studies student from Kendallville, Ind., received a Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst Study Scholarship, which is awarded to graduating seniors with a well-defined study or research project that makes studies at universities in Germany essential.
Four Arts and Letters seniors received French Government Teaching Assistantships, which are awarded to graduates who are proficient in French and who wish to teach English conversation classes in all regions of France:
- Jason G’Sell, a sociology and gender studies student from Florissant, Mo.;
- Daniel Harper, a psychology and Romance languages major from Kensington, Md.;
- Phil McAndrews, an economics and French student from Garden City, N.Y.; and
- Natalie Rosado, a history major from Jamestown, Ky.
Four seniors, including one Arts and Letters student, received National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships:
- Paul Barany, a biology and Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics student from South Bend, Ind.;
- Adrianna Garcia, a sociology and theology major from Kenai, Alaska;
- Nancy Paul, a physics major and Glynn Family Honors Program student from Mercer, Pa.; and
- Donna Grace Shrader, a biology major from Chesterton, Ind.
The Class of 2012 also includes a 2011 Truman Scholar, Elizabeth Davis, a Program of Liberal Studies major from Montana. The Truman scholarship is awarded to just 60 juniors nationwide each year, based on leadership potential, intellectual ability, and likelihood of “making a difference.” Winners receive graduate study funds, priority admission and supplemental financial aid at select institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and internship opportunities within the federal government.
Tracy Jennings, a classics major from the Class of 2010, received a Clarendon Scholarship to Oxford University. The program recognizes the best students worldwide as decided by experts in each student’s field, awarding 100 scholarships each year divided equally among the four divisions of study at Oxford: Humanities, Medical Sciences, Math and Science, and Social Sciences.
Jessica Nelson, a 2008 graduate in history, music, and the education, schooling, and society minor, received a fellowship from the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program, which supports exceptionally well-qualified students who are entering doctoral or equivalent graduate programs in humanities and the arts and who are interested in becoming teacher-scholars at church-related universities in the United States.
