Matthew J. Slaughter, a 1990 Notre Dame graduate who majored in economics, was recently sworn in as a member of President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA). The three-member CEA provides the president with objective economic analysis and advice on a wide range of economic policy issues.%
Bush nominated Slaughter for the post last fall, and the full U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed his nomination roughly two months later.
A specialist in the economics and politics of globalization, Slaughter is an associate professor of business administration in the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. In addition, he currently serves as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and as a visiting fellow at the Institute for International Economics.%
Slaughter’s previous appointments include positions with the Federal Reserve Board, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, U.S. Department of Labor, and Council on Foreign Relations.
After graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Notre Dame, Slaughter went on to earn his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work has appeared in some of the field’s most prestigious journals, such as American Economic Review and the Journal of International Economics, as well as in mainstream media outlets like Newsweek, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
