This lecture is the keynote event for the Notre Dame Law Review's annual symposium, this year entitled "Constitutional Reconstruction: History and the Meaning of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments." Her most recent book is A Legal History of the Civil War and Reconstruction: A Nation of Rights (Cambridge University Press, 2015). Her next book project is Only the Clothes on Her Back: Textiles, Law, and Commerce in the Nineteenth-Century United States.
