AFTLS Spring 2021: "The Merchant of Venice"

Location: Washington Hall

Rich comedy and lacerating tragedy collide in The Merchant of Venice, one of Shakespeare’s most uncomfortably relevant tales. Controversial for its depiction of a Jewish moneylender whose singleminded, yet principled, pursuit of revenge threatens the life of the romantic hero, The Merchant of Venice is as hotly debated as it is endlessly entertaining.

When the young Bassanio wishes to woo heiress Portia, he turns to his merchant friend Antonio for a loan. But when Antonio defaults on the loan, the lender, Shylock, demands a pound of Antonio’s flesh as repayment. With Bassanio’s life on the line, Portia, along with her friend Nerissa, rises up in his defense -- with surprising results.

The Merchant of Venice is brought to life by Actors From The London Stage, the renowned British touring company which travels to colleges and universities across the United States twice yearly. With each actor portraying multiple roles, The Merchant of Venice promises to be a bracing, thought-provoking night of theatre.
