Entitled “Art, Desire, and God: Phenomenological Perspectives,” the conference will be virtually hosted by the University of Notre Dame on the 2nd and the 3rd of October, 2020. Striving to be an interdisciplinary endeavor, theologians, philosophers, artists and others are invited to contribute to a collaborative reflection on the application of phenomenology to the investigation of these themes.
This conference seeks presentations of original research examining the relationships between art, desire, and God that lie at the heart of these questions. Especially encouraged to submit papers for consideration are early career faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and advanced research students. Papers may explore, but are not limited to, the thought of figures such as Michel Henry, Jean-Luc Marion, Richard Kearney, Jean-Louis Chrétien, Emmanuel Falque, and David Tracy, as well as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Françoise Lyotard, and Jacques Derrida. Papers that utilize the thought and artwork of underrepresented populations are encouraged, as are papers that actively engage the collection of the Snite Museum of Art (sniteartmuseum.nd.edu).
All papers and responses will be available for asynchronous viewing on October 2, 2020, to all who register at www.artdesiregod.com. Registration is free, but required.
A live stream colloquium roundtable will be held at 12:15-1:45pm on October 3, during which all presenters and plenary speakers will answer questions submitted by attendees the day prior.
