Lunchtime Lecture: Getting to Work - Fashion and the Modern Woman

-

Location: Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture, 1045 West Washington, South Bend, IN 46601

The Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture presents Linda Przybyszewski, Associate Professory of History. The 20th Century saw the rise of a new kind of woman professional, the kind that gave fashion advice for all the opportunities that the new century offered to women. Eager to dress women for both wage work and home work, the Dress Doctors distilled the principles of good design and shared them with American women. Millions of girls and women learned from radio programs, women's club lectures, 4-H programs, and home economics courses that beauty in dress comes from combining art with function. Whatever the current fashion happens to be, the lessons of good design still hold true. Which is why the Dress Doctors can still teach us something today.

Free and open to the public.
