Lecture: An Unkindness of Biographers - Charles Haughey and Modern Ireland

-

Location: 424 Flanner Hall

Gary Murphy, Professor of Politics in the School of Law and Government from Dublin City University, will focus on the challenges and opportunities of his current project: writing the biography of Charles Haughey (1925-2006). Haughey was Taoiseach of Ireland—serving  three terms in office—and the fourth leader of Fianna Fáil. Perhaps only Eamon de Valera, amongst Ireland's twentieth-century politicians, arouses as much passion and controversy as Haughey.

Murphy, the Fall 2016 Naughton Distinguished Visiting Faculty Fellow, will assess previous biographies of Haughey and attempt to answer the question of whether Haughey, whose career ended in disgrace, has been treated unkindly by his biographers.

All are welcome.
