In the midst of Vatican Council II (1962-1965), Morris West’s novel The Shoes of the Fisherman became a runaway bestseller. Released on June 3, 1963, the very day on which Pope John XXIII died, the novel tells the gripping story of a Ukranian archbishop, Kiril Pavlovich Lakota, a long-time prisoner in a Siberian labor camp. Freed from the camp through international diplomacy, Kiril is summoned to the Vatican, created a cardinal, and (in a surprising turn of events) elected pope. The award-winning 1968 film The Shoes of the Fisherman, starring Anthony Quinn as Pope Kiril, includes as a major subplot the pope’s relationship with Father Telemond, a scientist-theologian reminiscent of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. (1881-1955). Like the novel, the film reflects the atmosphere in which the Council took place and uncannily foreshadows in the story of Kiril Lakota the 1978 election to the papacy of Karol Wojtyla.
