“Bourdieu in the periphery” introduces basic aspects of Bourdieu’s “reflexive sociology” as they were interpreted and utilized in Latin America in different domains of cultural criticism. Concepts such as cultural/intellectual field, relative autonomy, habitus, cultural capital, and symbolic violence will be discussed in order to provide some basis for a critical approach to his theoretical apparatus. The talk will summarize Bourdieu’s epistemic and methodological contributions to the study of culture and society, as well as the critiques developed from the peripheral Latin American perspective.
