Cañizares-Esguerra, the Alice Drysdale Sheffield Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss his manuscript, Bible and Empire: The Old Testament in the Spanish Monarchy, from Columbus to the Wars of Independence, which explores how the Old Testament shaped the culture of the global Spanish monarchy, impacting understandings of empire, gender, race, and religion.
