Kendhammer is an expert on West African politics, and in particular, on Islam and politics in Nigeria. He is currently working on a book manuscript, tentatively titled Muslims Talking Politics: Islam, Democracy, and Law in Northern Nigeria, that focuses on the politics of Islamic law (sharia) implementation in 12 Nigerian states and its effect on popular perceptions of democracy and democratic effectiveness.
