Film Screening: The Lower Depths

Location: DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

Adapted from a Maxim Gorky play and originally filmed by Jean Renoir, Kurosawa’s rendering chronicles daily life in a ramshackle apartment complex in which a thief (Mifune) carries on an illicit affair with the landlord’s wife. Faithful to his source material, Kurosawa captures both the bleakness and humor in his characters’ mundane existences.
