Matthew Evangelista

Matthew Evangelista will examine the policies of the Obama administration, focusing on topics such as the targeted killing of terrorist suspects, torture, and the status of detainees. To what extent do these policies represent change from, or continuity with, the previous administration? He will revisit the arguments in his most recent book, Law, Ethics, and the War on Terror, about the impact of U.S. policy on norms of international behavior.
At Cornell, Evangelista teaches courses in international and comparative politics. He is the author of three other books: Innovation and the Arms Race ; Unarmed Forces: The Transnational Movement to End the Cold War; and The Chechen Wars: Will Russia Go the Way of the Soviet Union? He also is the editor of Peace Studies: Critical Concepts in Political Science and co-editor of Partners or Rivals? European-American Relations after Iraq ; New Wars, New Laws? Applying the Laws of War in 21st Century Conflicts ; and Democracy and Security: Preferences, Norms, and Policy-making. His current research interests include international humanitarian law, separatist movements, and gender and conflict.
