Peter Makhlouf, Department of German, Slavic, and Eurasian Studies, will present: "Catastrophic Belatedness (Celan, Darwish, Derrida)". His lecture will focus on a 1997 poem by Mahmoud Darwish, "A Cloud from Sodom (Ghayma min Sudūm)" which engages the work of the multilingual Czernowitz-born poet Paul Celan. How might we query the fate of poetry after genocide by tracing the transcultural reception of Celan, the Holocaust poet par excellence, in the work of Darwish, Palestine's national poet of the Nakba (catastrophe)?
