The Weimar era is seen as a period of exceptional cultural flowering, interrupted in 1933 by the rise of the Nazi government, but subsequently exported around the world by illustrious exiles. This talk will propose a revision of this master narrative by demonstrating how Weimar literature and culture was not only exported but also imported. Exiles and expats from around the world, especially Asia, co-created Weimar culture, as Watroba will explore by drawing on a range of forgotten texts, authors, and institutions.
