These full-time AmeriCorps VISTA positions are 12-month service opportunities that build tangible leadership and project management skills.

Participants will serve with an organization or agency in a designated city, helping them develop sustainable solutions to pressing challenges. Graduates hired for these jobs could find themselves using their problem-solving skills to help fight veteran homelessness, enable low-income youth to discover career opportunities in technology through robotics, or use leadership skills to guide nonprofits on how to utilize social media to further their missions. As a VISTA member, you can make a tangible difference in people's lives while earning invaluable professional experience.

Benefits of these positions include:

  • Living allowance
  • Pairing with a Notre Dame alumni mentor
  • $6,345 education award toward graduate school or student loans upon completion of program
  • No-interest deferral of student loans
  • Advantages in the federal hiring process — achieve non-competitive eligibility status

The Beyond the Dome Service Corps is also tapping into the power of the Notre Dame alumni network, asking Arts & Letters graduates from across the country to share job openings within their companies or service positions within organizations they're affiliated with. These positions will be hosted on the Meruelo Family Center for Career Development's Handshake platform and shared directly with 2020 graduates who apply to the Beyond the Dome Service Corps.

Service as a springboard to success

Nearly 1 in 5 Arts and Letters graduates spends a year or more doing full-time service work domestically or around the world. But service isn't a gap year — it's on-the-ground training to become a global citizen and community leader, and it's a way to develop skills and perspective that will help you be a difference-maker in any professional environment. Notre Dame alumni who do postgraduate service go on to flourish in a wide range of careers, including law, medicine, government, business, and nonprofit administration.

Kaitlin Sullivan

“My role at Facebook now is an extension of the model I used during my service, where you have to listen to people who are living with these issues and understand all the parts to come up with solutions. Service was a chance to do something more intentional and radical than I could later in life. It helped me set a goal of making sure that what I do from 9 to 5 is not different from what I want to be as a person.” — Kaitlin Sullivan '10, content policy manager at Facebook
