JAPANESE

By the completion of the 4th semester (Second Year Japanese II), students are expected to achieve the ACTFL level of “Intermediate Mid.” During the second semester of Second Year Japanese, students continue to develop the ability to produce more complex and sophisticated sentences in spontaneous interactions with interlocutors. At the end of the fourth semester, students should be able to attain the following proficiency level:

SPEAKING
Use new structures and apply already-learned phrases to:
Describe various experiences and problems.
Explain procedures and give instructions.
Express conjecture based on indirect evidence or direct evidence.
Express opinions indirectly.
Manage different speech levels, such as formal and informal.
Express respect to social superiors using honorific and humble expressions.
Learn expressions in oral narrative, and engage in conversation as an attentive listener using various fillers, attentive feedback, and common phrases.
Present a speech on various to describe and narrate in detail using polite speech style.

WRITING
Write hiragana, katakana, and 350+ kanji.
Write paragraphs on various topics, including unfamiliar topics.

LISTENING
Listen and understand some extended speech on a variety of familiar and some unfamiliar topics, such as programs on TV, short stories, and job interviews.
Understand signaling devices on speech in order to understand the most important information in the instructions.

READING
Demonstrate an accurate understanding of written texts that use familiar vocabulary and 350+ kanji .
Learn how to make strategic inferences on readings from the context.
Learn the structure of Japanese narrative texts, compare them with
English texts, and understand differences between the two.
Engage in reciprocal reading strategies in order to monitor and evaluate their reading skills.
Begin reading various materials (e.g., folk stories) without using dictionaries.

CULTURE
Acquire linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge that will enable them to communicate and interact appropriately in real-world situations. Students will start gaining familiarity with Japan’s social, cultural, and literary traditions through analysis of major literacy, artistic, and cultural works.

REFLECTIVITY
Self-monitor and self-evaluate their overall comprehension progress.
