Class of 2009
Music & Culture and Anthropology

I have always been a music enthusiast but had absolutely no idea what to study when I reached college.  Since I wanted to continue to perform, I auditioned for the vocal performance program right away, even though I knew I did not want that as a career.  I immediately fell in love with the people—fellow students who were as passionate as I was and professors who were incredibly well-trained and talented themselves.  Eventually, with the help of my music advisor and other professors, I found my niche in the new Music and Cultures program. I couldn't be happier!

I was fortunate to take a class taught by Donald Crafton, which involved music and film majors. This class may just be one of the best I will take here at Notre Dame.  It was fascinating, with the professor lecturing on music in films while teaching film techniques in return. We even took a field trip to a film festival just outside of Venice, Italy. There we saw some of the best silent film accompanists perform live, and we even participated in a master class.  The musicality was utterly amazing—the experience can never be replicated.  It was so great to see what a music degree can do!

Although I have had thoughts about culinary school (I could cook and sing at the same time, right?), I am currently planning to go to graduate school for either Vocal Performance or ethnomusicology.  I may even take a break between Undergraduate and Graduate programs by starting research in Africa. But my plans change everyday. Still.
