Dana Lee [photo] Border Inspires Service

My interest in borders and migration took flight with my summer service project in Tijuana, Mexico, in 2007. There, I took a short course on border studies, which showed me that the border is not just a geographically indelible line, but also a bridge, region, or institution.

I also served at a shelter for male migrants. My role was to cook, clean, interview migrants, listen to their stories, and help with any emotional crises. This experience allowed me to realize my passion for the border and its peoples. I continued to interact with migrants during my semester in Washington, D.C., through my internship, where I worked with unaccompanied Central American kids in removal proceedings.

These experiences are now coming together as I prepare to write a senior thesis. I hope to understand the impact of the borderlands on its inhabitants and those who pass through.
