Goals
Residing in a World of Ideas is a recent initiative designed in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs to bring students and faculty together in the residence halls to engage in political, cultural, religious, and ethical discussions.
Resources
The College and Student Affairs will provide each panel of successful applicants with resources, up to a cap of $2,000, for snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments, and a few meals for planning, advertising, and photocopying of reading materials when appropriate. Recipients will be asked to keep receipts and to submit a brief report on the discussion and the attendance.
Participants
The opportunity is open to all students at Notre Dame and all members of the regular Arts and Letters faculty (Teaching and Research/Special Professional).
Faculty members from the University’s other colleges are most welcome to participate, but they may not alone apply; at least one Arts and Letters faculty member must figure prominently in the application.
Location
Successful applicants will provide for more than one event, for example: multiple panels in multiple dorms, or, more likely, a single panel repeated on several evenings in multiple dorms. However, single one-time panels will also be considered.
Application
The application for RWI resources should include:
1. A brief description of the topic to be addressed with indication that diverse opinions will be expressed
2. Names and departments of the faculty speakers (at least one must be an Arts and Letters faculty member)
3. Names of the student speakers.
--Signatures of support from the following:
At least two students
One rector
One senior staff member of the Office of Student Affairs: Contact Sr. Mary L. Gude, C.S.C., Assist. Vice President, Student Affairs: 1-5550).
-- Evidence that the discussion could draw twenty or more students.
-- Dates, times, and locations, for the discussions.
-- A rough budget.

Program History
The idea for Residing in a World of Ideas originated from a successful set of wide-ranging panel discussions in the residence halls, which were organized by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, after September 11, 2001. The events in this series were orchestrated by students with the assistance of faculty members and rectors.
Events to date have addressed such topics as the Palestine-Israeli crisis, the impact of Judaism on Western intellectual thought, and the symbolism and meaning of Passover for Jews and Christians.
