UROP Fellowships and Grants

Facilitated by the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, the Undergraduate Research and Teaching Program (UROP) is an exciting initiative designed to expose undergraduate students to the rigors and rewards of scholarship.

Students work with faculty advisors to design a research project that may range from independent research to creative projects to the presentation of research at conferences. Awards include summer fellowship grants up to $3600 and research and materials grants of $1500.

Projects receiving grants in 2006 include:

  • Proust and Makine: The Link between Memory and Creative Imagination
  • Struggle for Equality: Comparing Catholic and Muslim Efforts of Integration into American Society
  • Who is Jeff Stephens? A DVD on the rap singer

Intellectual Community

  • The Journal for Undergraduate Reseach is an annual, student edited publication highlighting Arts and Letters undergraduate research.

  • Residing in a World of Ideas (RWI) brings students and faculty together in the residence halls to discuss matters of pressing or enduring importance.
  • Learning Beyond the Classroom Grants provide funding to students in support of cultural excursions, travel to conferences, and other activities aimed at enhancing student learning beyond the classroom. Students are eligible grants of up to $1500. Grant proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications are available here and in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

  • The Office for International Studies offers resources for students who want to "internationalize" their life, including co-sponsoring a competition for Summer Language Grants.

  • The Center for Creative Computing (CCC) provides leadership and resources to support digital technologies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Students may apply for grants as part of faculty-student teams.
