Research Profile

Professor of Political Science and Director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives, a Kellogg Institute fellow, as well as a UND trustee and UND fellow. His research and graduate teaching focuses on comparative political institutions, especially political parties. His writings include Rethinking the Center: Party Politics in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Chile (Stanford, 1992), coauthored volumes on parties and party systems in twelve countries called Building Democratic Institutions: Party Systems in Latin America (Stanford, 1995), on Christian democracy entitled Christian Democracy in Latin America: Electoral Competition and Regime Conflicts (Stanford, 2003), and on democratic governance entitled Democratic Givernance in Latin America (Stanford, forthcoming). He has won numerous awards for teaching, including the Sheedy Award (1993), the O'Malley Award (1994), the Kaneb Award (2002), and the Crystal Apple Award (2007).
