MacLeod is a native Irish speaker from the West Galway Gaeltacht of Connemara. She earned her primary degree in social administration and library and information studies and subsequently earned a master's in social work. As a social worker, she was employed in Irish-speaking regions, including Waterford and Galway. She teaches beginning and intermediate Irish language classes.
