Research Profile

Monroe's research interests are in psychopathology generally, and in the mood disorders specifically. The general goal of his research program is to understand etiological differences and subtype distinctions in major depressive disorders. Much of his work has examined the role of life stress in the onset and course of major depression. His current interests are in understanding the nature of recurrence of depression: Why do some people who develop a first lifetime episode of depression never experience another, whereas the majority of people who develop a first lifetime episode of depression go on to experience several recurrences over the life course? Since it is well documented that the association between major life stress and depression changes over repeated recurrences of the disorder, research involving life stress could yield useful insights into the processes involved with recurrence onsets and ultimately point toward more effective means of preventing depressive episodes.
