Research Profile
Sonia Gernes' areas of expertise are creative writing and 20th-century American Literature. She has published four books of poems - The Mutes of Sleepy Eye, Brief Lives, Women at Forty, and A Breeze Called the Fremantle Doctor - and one novel - The Way to St. Ives. Her poems and short stories have appeared in numerous reviews and anthologies. A founder of the University's Gender Studies program, she also teaches American Women Writers and is a winner of the Sheedy Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Notre Dame Faculty Award. She has been a Lilly fellow, a Fulbright senior lecturer, and has held an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship.
