Richard Gray

Research Profile

Gray's artwork investigates photographic constructs of identity with an emphasis on the role science plays in redefining the contemporary self. His photographic project, Human Factors digitally combines his microphotographs of human cells with figurative studies shot in the studio, fostering dialectic relationships between the visible and sub-visible. Gray explores links bewteen historical and contemporary representations of identity through images, early connections between photography and social science research, the cultural evolution of the photographic image and the influence new technologies have on our understanding of what it means to be photographed. Gray's artwork has been recently exhibited at the 2007 Pingyao Internationale Photography Festival, Pingyao, China; Human Nature, Indiana University, Bloomington; Warhzeichen: Photography & Science, Dresden University, Germany; US Gov't. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta; and the 2005 Internationale Fototage in Germany where he gave the keynote address "Contemporary American Photography." Gray has received regional fellowships from Arts Midwest/NEA and Indiana Arts Commission and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for the national Society for Photographic Education, Cleveland, OH.
