Research Profile
Appleby specializes in American religious history and comparative religious fundamentalisms. His most recent book, The Ambivalence of the Sacred: Religion, Violence and Reconciliation, explored the dynamics of religious violence and religious peacebuilding for the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict. With Martin E. Marty he edited The Fundamentalism Project, a five volume study of global religious resurgence published by the University of Chicago Press. The author of books and articles on Catholic modernism as well, Appleby is also the general editor of the Cornell University Press series, Cushwa Center Studies of Catholicism in Twentieth Century America. He teaches courses on modern religion, twentieth century American history, and peace studies.
