Research Profile

Gaffney's research interests include social and cultural anthropology, the social organization of religion, especially Islam, systems of religious and political authority, ritual performance, popular movements, violence, peace making, and humanitarian emergencies. Areas of ethnographic experience include the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. Books include The Prophet's Pulpit: Islamic Preaching in Contemporary Egypt and co-author of Breaking Cycles of Violence: Conflict Prevention and Interstate Crisis. Current research focus on mortuary rituals and memorial practices in Russia.
